A ‘Kickstart’ for University Funding

by | Jan 31, 2020

Giving back to the community is something we at Codebreak hold close to our hearts. Especially when it comes to Caitlin’s Kickstart Award.

This charity was founded in 2001 by Linda Hurcombe in loving memory of her daughter Caitlin.

Caitlin’s Story

Caitlin Hurcombe had the type of positive outlook on life that’s contagious. She was loved by everyone, most of all little children, who described her as an ‘awesome babysitter’. A lover of animals, Caitlin always showed such compassion for the world around her. Caitlin was incredibly gifted, showing talent in both academia, where she completed work experience at a law firm in London, and in The Arts. The Arts are what she really loved, showcased by how she excelled in her Performing Arts A-Levels at Ludlow Sixth Form College. Caitlin did so well, she planned to continue her study of The Arts at Manchester University.

Unfortunately, Caitlin tragically died in 1988 and never got to follow her dreams of doing what she loved at university.

To honour what a kind-hearted person, and gifted student, Caitlin was, her mother Linda set up Caitlin’s Kickstart Award in 2001 in her memory. The award is to provide financial assistance to students from Ludlow College, who wish to further their education but may not be able to without financial support.

The winner receives £1,000 from Caitlin’s charity, with each runner-up receiving £100 each. The award is only made possible by the generous donations of the public. Without donations, the charity would not be able to help young people further their education in Caitlin’s honour.

What are we doing about it?

This is an award that our very own Joel received in 2005, enabling him to go to university to study Graphic Design.

Joel said “I was over the moon when I won the Caitlin’s Kickstart Award. It meant I could purchase an Apple Mac ready for university and start on an even keel with the other students.”

He even went on to receive the Outstanding Achievement Award in Caitlin’s honour! Not bad, Joel!

“It came as a huge surprise when they awarded me the Amanda Brisbane Award for Outstanding Achievement. I was really touched. It is our pleasure to be able to give back to this fantastic local charity.”

As our way of saying thank you for the endless opportunities provided by Caitlin’s Kickstart Award, we built them a brand new website, making donations easier than ever before.

Caitlin’s mother, and founder of Caitlin’s Kickstart Award, Linda Hurcombe, said “Codebreak is more than the sum of its parts. If you ask the right questions, Codebreak is the answer. I love my new website. Check it out!”

How can you make a difference?

To donate, all you have to do is visit www.caitlinskickstartaward.org.uk and click ‘Donate’! That’s it.

Less than five minutes of your time can enable a young person to go to university and change their future, all in the name of Caitlin, an awesome babysitter, young woman and inspiration to young people.

 Here’s to kickstarting their future!
