Okay, it’s not that simple but it is easier than you think. Telling your brand story is so important. It’s not only how you build a business, it’s how you retain customers and have people genuinely invested in your brand.

But what does it mean to tell your brand story? How do you do it and how does it affect your business and marketing?

Well, let’s settle down and begin…

It all started with a mouse!

Well, kind of. One of the best companies in the world at telling their brand story is Disney. The reason they’re so good is because they tell their story first.

They tell their story and then they sell products off the back of their story. The Disney model isn’t the amount of money they make from the films, their model is the amount of money they make from the merchandise because of the films.

They tell their story and it resonates with people. That’s how it works.

Story first, sales later

People buy into the brand of your story and then buy the products on the other side. In your case, you’ve probably gone product or service first, and forgotten to tell your story. That’s not unusual for most businesses so don’t freak out. I’m here to help you fix it.

For starters, you need to think about why you’re telling your story. What’s the personal investment for the people buying your product or service? What are your values, and why should they buy into you, over your competitors?

What’s the emotional resonance, why does it work for them? What problem is it solving for them? That’s why you tell your story before you try and sell your product or service. 

So, how do you do that?

How to tell your brand story

Think about your life, think about your values. Think about your ambitions for society or your ambitions for the small businesses that you help. Now put that together into a story that resonates with your audience. It might be your own life experiences, it might be a sad story that becomes a happy ending.

It might be how you’ve helped people in the past or a case study. All of those things can build to a point where people want to buy into what you do, or what you sell. That’s why you need to be telling your story.
