This month Facebook has announced their latest round of tweaks to the News Feed Algorithm. This time with a focus on prioritizing original video content. Content that users are looking for and would like to see more of.
These changes were announced by Product Management Director, David Miller last week. He said “We want to help talented video creators find their audience and build profitable video businesses on Facebook. We want to help media companies — whether large, small, global, or local — continue their invaluable work. And above all, we want to help people on Facebook discover great videos and build relationships with the creators and publishers that matter to them.”
What is the Facebook News Feed Algorithm?
Have you ever wondered how Facebook determines what content to show to which users? Or perhaps why certain posts seem to reach more people than others? You might have heard about the Facebook News Feed Algorithm… but what is this algorithm and how does it work? This Algorithm is the tool that Facebook uses to determine the value of every post and assign it a relevancy score. The posts relevancy to users is what ultimately determines how much it is shown and who too.
The important thing to remember about the algorithm is that there are an ever-changing set of rules. Last time we had a big change was at the start of 2018. Facebook announced that it wanted to encourage truly authentic content that people want to engage with. This meant that posts from business pages became less prominent on the newsfeed. It didn’t affect Codebreak’s clients as we have always focused on strong content. But many business owners’ Facebook pages nosedived until they adapted (or didn’t!).
Changes like these force businesses to create better content and really think about what people want to see. Making Facebook a better place for you and for me and the entire human race!
What do these changes mean for your business?
If you’re already make regular original video content for social media, keep on doing what you are doing! The more engaging the video, the better it will perform.
If you have never considered using video to promote your business, now would be a good time to get started! Short, snappy, engaging videos don’t have to take long to make. You don’t need expensive tech to get started either. Most modern phone cameras are good enough to shoot video for social media.
That’s not to say that other types of content aren’t going to work anymore. Nice pictures, links to interesting articles, etc. are still to be encouraged. Variety is the spice of life!
All it means is that video is becoming a more valuable tool and if you want to get the most out of Facebook, then creating video content should be a part of your strategy.
As always with updates to the News Feed, businesses that embrace the change reap the benefits. There is no fighting it… Facebook sets the rules (whether we like it or not). Video is going to be an even more vital part of getting the most out of the platform.
