We love social media. And that is exactly why we’ll spend our time learning all there is to know and keeping on top of the regular updates. It’s always good to share. So, after sitting through an Instagram Masterclass earlier this week, we thought it would be nice to pass some of the tips and tricks we learnt.

Instagram might not be for everyone, which is understandable. But, over 1 billion people use Instagram each month and 80% of those users follow at least one business. Which could be yours!

So, let’s get on with it…

1. Your profile:

Firstly, you need to make sure your profile is going to be found and makes people want to follow you.

It’s all about the name, profile photo and the description. Having a profile photo that explains who you are is the first step to making your brand recognisable. It gives you the brand consistency that you need.

Then we come onto the name. You might think “well, that’s obviously my business name, duh!” but… if you add in a sneaky keyword about what your business does, you’ll be seen in search results!

Your description should be to the point, there is no point having a piece of literary work there. Three bullet points; who you are, why they should follow you and how can they get more information. Simple.

Let’s talk about followers. First things first, do not buy them. It may seem tempting to make your page look popular, but Instagram is getting wise to it. They will delete your profile if you have a substantial amount of fake accounts following you. Is it worth it?

2. Content:

The content is probably the most important thing to Instagram success! Boring, unoriginal content will get you nowhere.

Using Instagram from a business point of view can be difficult. There is a fine line between being too sales orientated and having genuine content. As a rule, you should follow content, content, content, sale – the perfect mix!

Getting the perfect balance will be a case of learning what works for you. But, always consider KLT; know, like, trust. People are unlikely to buy from your brand unless they know you, like you or trust you. In order to get the KLT on the go, you could base your content on the people within the business – people buy from people.

3. Engagement:

Now that you’ve got your profile and content perfected, you’ll want to start increasing your engagement. And rightly so, you want to be seen.

Did you know that emoji’s increase your engagement by 25%? Just one simple emoji can make that much difference! Pairing your content with great descriptions is the way to go.

You can now use an external website to change the font on your caption. We’re not too sure about it here in the office, will it make your page look tacky? We might eat our words, but at the moment we don’t think it’ll catch on.

Even though you don’t want to be sales focused, you still need to let your followers know what to do with your content. Do you want them to share with their friends, or give you a ring? We’ve got a handy blog on calls to action that can help you out.

4. Reach:

Getting your content to go far isn’t as tricky as you may think. Just a few simple things can increase your reach.

Tagging your location will make a world of difference, even though it doesn’t seem it. Say you’re a car dealership, wanting customers to visit your showroom. Tag in your dealership on every post and people will notice where you are, they might even pop in when they next drive past.

Use hashtags with caution. The ideal amount to use is 11, it used to be 25. Too many hashtags mean your content is just not going to get shown, Instagram doesn’t like it.

Next up is a question we get asked a lot. What time of day should you post and how often? Well, that is completely dependent on your business. What works well for one, may not be effective for the other. It’s a case of trial and error, which does take time.

5. Instagram Stories:

Not everyone uses Instagram Stories, but over 500 million users watch them. A third of the most viewed stories come from businesses.

These are great for showing the daily updates in the office. Are you having a team meeting? Did someone bring in some goodies? Get it up on the story, it’s all about brand awareness and keeping your brand looking personable.
