Seeking The Opinions Of Others

In this age where lots of people don’t want to take responsibility for making decisions, this Henry Ford quote is good to bear in mind when considering launching a new product or service.

Because people aren’t always right

Especially in large numbers. That herd mentality. Social media can be a terrible place to ask for people’s opinions. For example, if you ask whether people think it would be a good idea if you launched X, the vast majority would say yes because they like you and don’t want to hurt your feelings.

I’m not saying surveys or taking polls can’t work but sometimes in business you need to trust your own due diligence and entrepreneurial instinct more, and/or have a small, trusted network around you of successful business owners.

Sometimes there’s a grey area between genuinely welcoming people’s input and having someone to blame should the decision turn out to be wrong. That fear of taking failure on the chin.

This could even mean the opinion of just one person. My mum will ask me if I know a good plumber because if he turns out to be a doughnut, it’ll be my fault…!

If you’re meant to win this game, you’ll make more good decisions than bad ones. You’ll win more than you lose. When it comes to marketing, some channels and ads will work better than others… but you’ll be ahead of those who are still debating where to start.

In essence, the longer a decision goes on, the less likely it is to happen. Indecision is the thief of opportunity.
