Staying in Touch After the Sale
Most business owners spend time and money acquiring new customers. But not all of them spend time and money staying in touch once they’ve become customers.
It’s been proven to be eight times less expensive to keep an existing customer than acquire a new one. So if you’re not contacting customers and are relying solely on pixie dust for them to remember you, this blog’s for you.
One good pizza isn’t always enough…
Here’s a real-life example. I saw an Instagram Ad for vegan pizzas. I’ve totally cut down on my meat and dairy. It was a well-written ad. The webpage it took me to made all the benefits clear plus contained a cheeky offer. They even had PayPal, saving me having to get off the sofa. Lovely!
After purchasing, I received two emails from them. One confirming my purchase and then a nice “Welcome” type of email.
Their pizzas were delicious and I’ll probably buy off them again. But I might not, as in the meantime I’m being targeted by lots of other vegan stuff.
People have short memories. Even when they’re happy with a new product/service, they can quickly forget in today’s competitive marketplace.
Stay in touch and build on the relationship
If you’ve got a customer, stay in touch with them! Sounds simple, right?! Not hard selling them, but at least reminding them that you’re still there, the good work you’re doing, something funny, the odd offer… whatever.
So when customers next want to purchase your type of stuff, yours is the name that pops into their head.
This vegan company has no follow-up email sequence. Or, if they do, the emails are spaced out way too far. You don’t want to bombard people with emails but there’s little point being the world’s best kept secret. There’s a happy medium.
Oh, and the company isn’t running retargeting ads either. Another low cost trick missed.
Out of sight, out of mind. And that means losing money.
Harsh, this business thing, isn’t it? Wouldn’t it be wonderful if people magically remembered to keep buying from us?!
