The New Facebook Facelift

If you’re anything like us and are an avid Facebook user, you may have noticed the new iOS app icon and logo on your mobile version of the platform. The recent gradual roll out of this re-design marks the first change in quite a few years.

 Why has the design changed?

 Facebook is the most popular social media service in the world with over 2.32 billion monthly active users, so they have to keep it in tip top shape.

At the end of April, Mark Zuckerberg announced the major new Facebook design changes for iOS and desktop that has brought about a brand new user interface, logo and downloadable brand assets.

The aesthetic will appear much lighter, with the loss of the majority of the dark blue theme we’re all used to on both mobile and desktop. The intent of this is to make it easier to navigate around the platform. There will also be a redesigned top tab bar.

 It has also been announced that the web platform will be getting a dark mode function which will help to cut down on glare and put photos and videos more in focus.

The new logo and colour palette

 The Facebook logo, which has been a square for some time now, will be circular, making it look more dynamic in appearance.

You may have already noticed the subtle change to the iOS app icon on your phone, which now appears in a lighter shade of the gradient blue. The company logo is now centred, rather than its offset position that was used for years. This shade of blue now also matches the Messenger app icon.

Just a side note on Messenger, Facebook have plans to integrate Messenger, WhatsApp and Instagram. This is expected to be completed by the end of the year, beginning of 2020.

Benefits of this to a business? Cross-platform messaging could lead the way for businesses on one platform to message potential customers on another. Targeted, paid-for advertising could be improved too.

How will these changes affect your business?

In the long and short of it, quite a lot. If you think about everything that promotes your business that has the Facebook logo on; your website, business cards, any branded stationery, printed collateral – everything will need to be changed!

So, what do we think about these changes?

 Well, it’s been a long time coming. We are a firm believer of keeping your brand as seamless as possible. Consistency is key. With the very subtle change in colour and plans to make the interface easier to use, they could be onto a winner.

As an office, our overall opinions are divided.

We all agree that in terms of the work this has caused for businesses; disruption and cost, both time and money is in no doubt.

Design wise, some of us like the colour change, some of don’t. It’s refreshing, however, there is the argument that the iOS icon now looks similar to the Twitter and App Store icon.
