What is SEO?

Everybody wants their website to rank well on Google… But what can you do to start moving towards the top of page one? SEO, or Search Engine Optimisation, is the process of fine-tuning the content and data on your website so that you can rank as well as possible in search engines.

SEO has a reputation for being technical and complicated and admittedly it can be. However, not all SEO has to be difficult or time-consuming! There are some things you can start doing right away to make an impact on your ranking.

We’ve put together our Top Five Easy SEO Wins! All jargon-free, you’ll be pleased to know.

#1 – Write for the internet

Write with the short attention span of most internet readers in mind! To this end, your writing should be clear and to the point. Less than 20 words per sentence is a handy rule of thumb. Using subheadings is also a great way to make your content easier to digest.

Writing long sentences is an easy trap to fall into. You get carried away with the knowledge you’re sharing with your readers. Every so often, stop, take stock and see if any sentences can be turned into two sentences. Google values readability.

#2 – Optimise your page information

Properly optimising your SEO titles and descriptions is a great way to start performing better in search engines. These are the meta description boxes you’ll see in the backend of your website.

This is where you provide users – and therefore Google – with a relevant summary about your page. It’s what you see in the search results at the front end, i.e. a title and a description.

Your page titles should be kept to less than 60 characters.

It’s amazing how many websites we take over to find out that the meta descriptions boxes have been filled out badly… or sometimes not at all.

#3 – Mobile-friendly

Having a mobile-friendly site is critical. Not least because Google checks sites to make sure they are providing a usable mobile experience.

Regularly posting meaty content to your website is a great way to boost your SEO. This is commonly achieved through a blog. This is also an invaluable way for you to offer insight into your industry. If you can be seen as an expert in your field, marvellous.

A blog should ideally be at least 500 words. Make them easy to digest by following steps one and two.

#5 – Webmaster tools

These tips will help you get off to a solid start with your SEO. Maintaining a consistent effort across your whole site, tweaking existent content and adding new content, is the best way to ensure lasting SEO success.
