The Times They Are A-Changin’

I love a bit of cycling. I love watching it too.
Unfortunately, crashes come with the territory.
The other day, one pro cyclist had a bad one. Luckily, he’s OK.
Why? He said: “Probably my helmet saved my life”.
Yet I still see cyclists not wearing helmets. OK, they’re not in some mad professional bike race. Often, they’re just pootling around the lanes like me. But, if you come off and smack your head, would you rather be wearing a helmet or not?
And what’s the one thing they’ve all got in common? They’re all blokes of “a certain age”. (I count myself in that demographic, sadly.)
Folk who can remember riding bikes when no one wore a helmet. Just like you didn’t need seat belts in a car. When smoking was cool.
It’s a wonder any of are still here, really.
Anyway, my point is – learning is constant.
We can either keep up and keep informed or go the way of the dodo.
Because, as you know if you’ve followed my stuff for a while, the six words that will kill any business are:
We’ve always done it this way.
Just because I never used to wear a bike helmet doesn’t mean I shouldn’t wear one now. Hell, the roads are a lot busier than they used to be, for starters.
Just because you’ve only ever run ads in the paper doesn’t mean you shouldn’t consider other avenues.
Just because you’ve run Facebook Ads a certain way for five years doesn’t mean that way will cut the mustard today.
In fact, it won’t. I guarantee it.
Back in the day, you could bung a few quid behind a Facebook Ad, choose an age range and location and Bob was your auntie’s live-in lover.
But there have been too many technology developments, increased competition, changing audience habits, smarter targeting…. Even how you ran Facebook Ads last year won’t yield the same results in 2023.
Do what you’ve always done, you’ll get what you’ve always gotten.
